Hong Kong Apothecary transports us to the world of Chinese medicine—a place of gou (plasters), daan (pellets), yun (pills), saan (powders), leung cha (herbals teas), yau (medicinal oils), zau (wine)—cures for every known ailment from indigestion to impotency.

Author Simon Go combed manufacturers, shops, and home medicine cabinets for four years. He interviewed numerous practitioners and manufacturers of herbal medicine and collected the most compelling examples. The result is a visual cabinet of curiousities, a graphical pharmacopoeia.

Richly illustrated with over 700 graphical design motifs, this book takes us through the evolution, diversity, and creativity of Chinese medicinal packaging. Many of these medicines are no longer produced, making Hong Kong Apothecary a memoir of a rapidly disappearing culture.

吳文正 Simon Go

福建晉江人，生於香港，畢業於香港理工大學設計系，從事新聞攝影工作，平日喜愛跑跳跌撞於香港舊區，對低下層居民生活尤感關注，繼而進行系列式的報導攝影，探討社會問題。九十年代，舉辦數次攝影展覽，以反映富裕社會背後，存有貧窮的真相，相片中突顯低下層居民的尊嚴。其作品曾於巴黎和美國巡迴展出。2009年於中國平遙及2012年於俄羅斯展出近作，甚獲好評。除報導攝影外，多年來，吳文正專注搜集本地民間舊物作研究與進行口述歷史記錄，於2001年，出版以傳統中成藥包裝設計為題材的書籍——《香港葫蘆賣乜藥》，同年獲香港印藝大獎金獎。2003年，此書更出版美國英文版本。2008年出版《街坊老店》摄影集，以口述歷史與影像記錄行將消失的香港老風貌。 2007年中，舉辦「香港不列顛」攝影聯展，以抓拍的方法表達後殖民地香港的社會狀況，之後以傳統老店為主題的個展「老店舖陳」於同年九月舉行。吳氏作品現為私人與香港文化博物館收藏。同年秋季其兩幅老店作品於蘇富比拍賣會拍賣。吳文正現為文化葫蘆創辦人及項目總監，策展及參展之展覽包括，牛頭角下邨展覽「牛下開飯」（2009）、蘇屋展覽「So Long‧蘇屋」(2009)、在荷李活道已婚警察宿舍举行聚焦中上環展覽「港文化‧港創意」(2010)、關注本土家居歷史變遷的設計展覽「家家有計」(2010)、海港城·「流逝風景——香港老店與街角」吳文正攝影展覽(2010)、K11·「味不可言」展覽（2010）、香港賽馬會「港文化‧港創意」——深水埗「創藝傳城」展覽(2011)、油麻地文化藝遊（2011-2012）、香港賽馬會「港文化‧港創意」——荃葵青「樂藝城鄉客家情」展覽(2012)。他亦是資深的社區文化人，帶領公眾遊賞香港舊區。他導賞的文化導賞團有：「編行西九」（2010）、「家家游樂尖沙咀／中上環——歷史建築導賞團」(2010)、「老店／飲食在中上環」(2010)、「上海街老店之旅」(2009-2010)及深水埗文化iTour(2011)。同時，他更致力於本土文化的保存推廣與創意文化設計的教育，策劃參與的研究與教育活動包括：「Hong Kong Memory Project:消失中的Street Life——油麻地上海街綱絡展覽及導賞計劃」(2010)、「老店傳藝展覽」計劃 (2010)及「Too Proud100‧土炮一百」創意設計作品比賽 (2010)。吳文正亦作為兼職講師，自2007年起任教於香港城市大學創意媒體學院「香港紀實攝影」課程，2009年亦任教於香港大學通識教育「紀實香港」課程。2010年夏在香港電台「原來有段故」節目中擔任客座嘉賓。2012年獲邀參與香港首個TED x Kowloon 的演講嘉賓，試從攝影反觀社會現狀。 Since he graduated from the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1990, Simon Go has been an active artist, dedicated to documentary and fine-art photography. In his work, Go has brought an acute sensibility to his examination of poverty and social action issues in Hong Kong. He has produced a number of highly regarded photo documentary exhibitions including “People with no money” (1997) and “Home and Homeless” (2004). Go’s penetrating eye on social issues is combined with a sentimental indulgence in collecting and local culture. Through oral history, photos and research, he has published "Hong Kong Apothecary: A Visual History of Chinese Medicine Packaging" (Chinese edition) (2001), "Hong Kong Old Shops and Memories Forever" (2011). Simon Go’s photographs are collected by various private galleries and collectors as well as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Simon Go has served as an investigative photo reporter/editor for various Hong Kong newspapers. Two works from the series of "Hong Kong Old Shops" were offered at auction in Sotheby’s Hong Kong 2009 Fall Auction. In 2009, Simon’s devotion to Hong Kong traditions and local culture lead him to set up HULU Culture Limited, a Hong Kong non-profit and cultural organization. The organization aims to protect traditional cultural heritage and nurture the humanistic spirit. Simon has also curated numerous exhibitions over the years, based on the different districts and aspects of Hong Kong.
